Frequently Asked Questions
Explore our Frequently Asked Questions for quick answers on policies, claims, and coverage, helping you make informed insurance decisions.
What’s the difference between Marketplace plans and private health insurance?
Marketplace plans: Affordable Care Act (ACA) -compliant, may include subsidies (tax credits) based on your income, purchased through Healthcare.gov or state Marketplace.
Private plans: Purchased directly from insurers or agents, may offer more customization but no income-based discounts so you pay full cost and don’t have any opportunity to tax credits or the ACA subsidies based on your income.
Can I get coverage if I’m self-employed?
Yes! If you’re self-employed, you can absolutely get health insurance. Most self-employed individuals purchase coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. You can choose from a variety of plans and, depending on your income, you may qualify for subsidies or tax credits to help lower your monthly premium.
You can also explore private health insurance plans directly through an insurance company or agent if you prefer coverage outside the Marketplace. Call us and we’ll go over your eligibility and see which options is best suitable to your needs.
Being self-employed doesn’t limit your options — it simply means you’ll shop for coverage on your own instead of through an employer.
How long does enrollment take?
Enrollment is usually a quick and straightforward process. If you have your information ready, completing an application and selecting a plan can take as little as 15–30 minutes.
The exact time depends on your situation — for example, if you’re applying for subsidies, verifying income, or comparing multiple plans, it may take a little longer. Working with a licensed agent can make the process faster and help ensure everything is submitted correctly the first time.
Is this the same as Obamacare?
Yes — “Obamacare” is just a nickname for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the health care law that created the Health Insurance Marketplace.
When people say “Obamacare,” they’re usually referring to Marketplace health insurance plans that follow ACA rules. These plans cover essential health benefits, protect people with pre-existing conditions, and may offer subsidies to lower monthly costs based on income.
What if I already have a plan?
If you already have health insurance, you still have options during Open Enrollment. You can:
- Keep your current plan if it still meets your needs.
- Update or change your plan if your situation, budget, or coverage needs have changed.
- Shop for new plans to see if you can find better coverage or lower costs.
Even if you’re happy with your current plan, it’s a good idea to review it each year. Premiums, benefits, and networks can change — and you may qualify for new savings.
Do you charge for your services?
No — there’s no extra cost to you for working with a licensed health insurance agent. Agents are paid by the insurance companies, not by clients, so your premium is the same whether you enroll on your own or with help.
The difference is that when you work with an agent, you get personalized guidance, help comparing plans, and support throughout the year — at no additional charge or fees.
Which states are you licensed in?
Colorado, Texas, Illinois and California.
